   LOOK FOR

    Look for in shoots
  • Collapse (sudden death) of one or more shoots on an arm or of the whole vine
  • Broken, callused or damaged areas on trunk, cane or shoot
  • Single affected vines or many along a row
  • MAN OR THE VINE
  • Yellowed or reddened leaves on isolated shoots or single arms
  • Physical damage on shoot, arm or trunk below the affected leaves
  • Tendrils, wires or training strings constricting the shoot, arm or rootling

   CONDITIONS

  • MACHINERY
  • Vineyard equipment sometimes hits and physically damages the vine which wilts or declines, particularly after hot weather.
  • MAN OR THE VINE
  • Sometimes caused by the things we do or by the vine itself.

OTHER MECHANICAL DAMAGE IMAGES

Machinery damage to the spur will disrupt the supply of nutrients above the break Poorly adjusted machine harvesting equipment can damage bark and inner wood on vine trunks ….this disrupts sap flow and restricts growth in spring Restricted growth in spring can be caused when sap flow is disrupted by bark damage from poorly adjusted machine harvesters Any disruption to sap flow stunts the shoots and causes leaves to yellow (on white varieties) or redden 'String disease' stunts shoots which swell where sap is constricted. Leaves yellow and curl downward Tendrils sometimes girdle arms or shoots and block sap flow Tendrils sometimes girdle arms or shoots and block sap flow
