   LOOK FOR

    Look for in shoots
  • TYPE 1
  • Bleached internodes on dormant canes
  • Small black fruiting bodies (pycnidia) in the bleached areas
  • Sharp black lines outlining the bleached areas
  • TYPE 2
  • Bleached internodes on dormant canes
  • Elongated black cracks and scars on the lower 3-4 internodes of shoots
  • Stunted shoots

    Look for in leaves
  • TYPE 2
  • Small black spots (< 1 mm) with yellow halos on leaves

   CONDITIONS

  • Spreads during long periods of cool wet weather in spring
  • Monitor carefully in the period 3-6 weeks from budburst because actively growing foliage is most susceptible.

   NOTES

    Phomopsis can be confused with mite damage.
