   LOOK FOR

    Look for in bunches
  • Bunch stalks with small, variously-shaped and sometimes sunken, chocolate-brown spots - soon after berry softening
  • Dried-up patches on bunch stalks - after hot weather later in the season
  • Bunches with shrivelled and, later, dried berries on some stalks
  • Large segments or whole bunches with poorly ripened and/or withered berries

   CONDITIONS

  • A physiological disorder; cause still not known
  • Also known as waterberry, BSN shows large variation in incidence and severity in different varieties, regions and seasons. Sometimes severe in Cabernet, Ruby Cabernet and Flame Seedless, BSN occurs more severely on spur-pruned vines and shaded bunches.
